Soft Services — Eternal Lemon 96 Who is better traveled and more beloved than the lemon? Grown and adored across continents, essential to every cuisine, hopping from savory to sweet and back again, lemon can set out in any direction and find a warm reception. In fragrance, you’ll often find it as a top note —first in, first out—the fastest to hit the nose and the soonest to fade. But in Eternal Lemon, we wanted lemon to remain the main character.

Lip-smackingly tart, lightly sweet and equally salty, this thick paste adds a much- needed lift to wintry bakes and stews. @ tartvinegar Our holiday-edition fragrance is based on a recipe of preserved lemon paste, by brand friend Chris Crawford of Tart Vinegar , long beloved by our founder Rebecca Zhou and featured in Samin Nosrat’s new cookbook .

The name itself plays on this good-for-forever idea, the elongation of lemon’s natural lifespan to unlock its acrid powers in the doldrums of winter, when its brightening powers are most lacking.

We turned to master perfumer Vincent Schaller to balance lemon’s acidity without diluting or distracting from its magnetic zest: “After exploring the lemon preserve inspiration and playing with different types of lemon, I landed on the perfect heart for this fragrance: the Primofiore lemon, a beautiful Italian lemon whose name means ‘first bloom’. It’s a particularly special expression of lemon, which blooms in the spring and is harvested now.

Additional notes were added simply to draw out Primofiore lemon’s freshness and vibrance: orange to add juiciness, lime to bring out tartness, and ginger for lift and spice. ” As a textural feature, glycerin morsels were introduced into the existing microcrystal base for an immersive experience of mimicked lemon preserves—a tactile and visual cue to accompany the olfactory ones.

Glycerin is already present in the core formula, so these extra bits serve equally functional and decorative purposes without interrupting the intensity of exfoliation. It’s that little extra touch that really, ahem, takes the cake. @ tartvinegar Our holiday-edition fragrance is based on a recipe of preserved lemon paste, by brand friend Chris Crawford of Tart Vinegar , long beloved by our founder Rebecca Zhou and featured in Samin Nosrat’s new cookbook .
