“Heat, humidity, sweat, being outdoors exposed to the elements, and the application of sunscreen can all exacerbate skin concerns throughout the summer. ” —Sofie Pavitt In this email, we cover the why behind the skin concerns you’ve probably been seeing more of since summer began and how to best resolve them—including product recs from Sofie Pavitt Face for the face, and Soft Services for the body. SUMMER CONCERN My skin feels rough, dull, and more textured than usual.

WHY During summer, skin can naturally thicken as a defense against increased UV exposure, leading to rougher texture. This, in addition to our skin cell turnover accelerating due to humidity, can lead to more buildup on the skin’s surface, leaving your skin stressed, textured, and dull. TRY Exfoliate regularly to prevent buildup, which can lead to congestion, dryness, or a chicken-skin texture (on body).

Both chemical and physical exfoliation work by loosening the gluey bonds that hold dead skin cells together at the skin’s surface, helping them to slough off. Friendly but very important reminder: Use sun protection when actively exfoliating. Better yet, just wear the sunscreen everyday! Then you won’t need to worry.

Warmer weather can mean to faster skin cell turnover, which lingers on the skin’s surface if not regularly or properly shed off.

This, in addition to sweat, sunscreen, and bacteria, can get trapped within pores, clogging them and leading to breakouts TRY Gentle, consistent exfoliation will help to maintain smooth, clear skin, though if breakouts do arise, opt for acne-fighting hero ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to kill acne-causing bacteria, clear blemishes, and help prevent future breakouts.

WHY Absolutely. High heat, UV levels, air conditioning, and sweat can disrupt your skin’s equilibrium, leading to dehydration, redness, inflammation, and increased sensitivity as your skin works overtime to regulate temperature.

Our skin always needs hydration and moisture to function properly, despite the weather. This is where adjusting your skincare for the changing seasons comes in. TRY Gels and lighter-weight formulas for daytime are helpful in preventing the skin from feeling congested and smothered.

These textures tend to be more elegant and enjoyable to apply during high-heat periods—they moisturize and absorb quickly, while not feeling like a thick layer of product is melting off your skin as soon as you step foot outside. As an alternative, opt for a hydrating sunscreen in lieu of moisturizer in the AM to prevent that layered-cake feeling and save your richer stuff for nighttime.

TRY Double cleanse for a clean slate. A proper, thorough cleanse will ward off and prevent the concerns we covered above, like uneven texture, congestion, and breakouts. Using the same gentle cleanser twice will do the job—what matters most is taking the time to fully remove all those external layers that have latched onto your skin.

How do I best treat and prevent these concerns? BUG BITES Resist the itch! This will lessen the chance of hyperpigmentation and promote quicker healing.

Use a non-medicated hydrocolloid pimple patch to prevent further infection and scabbing. SUNBURN Apply a cooling aloe product or gel-based formulas to rehydrate skin without occluding, which can potentially trap heat to the burn, causing further irritation. HEAT RASH Cool down the skin with cold compresses. Wear loose-fitting, natural fabrics like cotton until it subsides. HYPERPIGMENTATION Sunscreen, always. Hydrate the skin.

Apply a chafe balm to affected areas (also a great prevention measure). Regularly exfoliate to help lift darker areas and even out skin tone. Wear a wide-brim hat to protect your face from the sun, which is a better option than a baseball cap—the latter ultimately only protects the forehead.
